🌱 The 3 Shifts
The three needs, first put forward by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci in their seminal Self Determination Theory, include:
1. Connection. Students need to have strong, healthy relationships with others. They need to feel like they matter and are accepted and appreciated by their community.
2. Competence. Students need to feel like they can rely on their skills to manage whatever comes their way.
3. Control. Students need to have a strong sense of autonomy and know that they can make meaningful choices about their lives.
In the traditional approach to "school," many students find it hard to feel connected, competent, and in control.
Instead of acceptance, they find judgement and exclusion.
Instead of competence they are labeled as "behind."
Instead of autonomy every move they make is micromanaged.
No wonder kids don't often "like" school. It's not a place where their needs are met, yet they are required by law to be there for the majority of their childhoods.
How do we fix this? Well, it starts by making 3 primary shifts in our thinking.
As gardeners, we cultivate connection as we build accepting, supportive relationships.
As travel agents, we prioritize personalization which leads to competence.
As consultants, we honor ownership as we provide opportunities for kids to make meaningful choices about their learning.
If you let these ideas guide how you treat every young person you interact with, you will become an inspiring and motivating force for good in their lives, and that's what being a Prenda guide is all about.
